New Program Supports Underserved Youth in Hudson County

Jersey City, NJ (PRWEB) August 11, 2006

HudsonPride (Jersey City Connections, Inc.) will present “Caribbean Nights,” a fundraiser to launch the Leadership Connections Mentoring Program (LCMP) at Jersey City Connections/HudsonPride, on Sunday, August 13, 2006, at L.I.T.M., a local bar / restaurant in Jersey City.

“Caribbean Nights” will feature the documentary “YouthConnect Out Loud”. The film will be followed by an art exhibit featuring Beth Achenbach, John Ruddy and other local artists, a silent auction and Caribbean Bingo.

“It’s been a great experience so far and this event gives the Leadership Connections Mentoring Pro-gram a chance to share who we are and what we stand for in the community” said project manager Nancy Caamaño. ”We hope that everyone comes out and supports us so this program can grow and be available to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth in Hudson County.”

The Leadership Connections Mentoring Program is a new venture that will pair [LGBTQ] youth with adults in their community to address the everyday challenges that many LGBTQ face. The program was created as a community project for the Self Expression and Leadership Program at Landmark Education in New York City as a way to further assist underserved LGBTQ youth in Jersey City and in Hudson County.

“We are delighted to have such a unique program join our services at Jersey City Connections,” said agency director Guido Sanchez. “With our current social support and HIV prevention, we work on community and group levels. Now we have the opportunity to take dedicated volunteers from the community and pair them in supervised relationships to help our youth in the community who face prejudice, hatred, and bigotry almost every day.”

HudsonPride (Jersey City Connections) is a 501(c)3 serving the unmet needs of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender population, as well as HIV positive people of any orientation, through sup-portive social services, outreach, advocacy and profesional development trainings for other service providers. The YouthConnect program which hosts LeadershipConnections Mentoring is funded through grants by the New Jersey AIDS Partnership, as well as Jersey City and Hudson County Community Development Block Grants.
